Prof. M. J. Manohar Rao Award for Young Researchers

At the 48th Annual Conference of the Indian Econometric Society, held at Pondicherry University, Pondicherry, it was resolved to institute an award in memory of Prof MJ Manohar Rao. This award, which is based on contributions from the students and friends of Prof Manohar Rao, would consist of a cash prize and a certificate and would be given to young scholars below the age of 35. This award would be given every year during the annual conference. A search Committee is appointed in advance (a) to invite nominations for the award, and (b) to recommend to the Council the names of persons who in their judgement are fit to receive the award.

Prof. A. L. Nagar Award Scheme

With the financial support from the family and friends of Prof. A. L. Nagar, the TIES has instituted the following schemes to commemorate the contributions of Prof. Nagar.

  1. Prof. A. L. Nagar Fellow
  2. This would be an annual award to be given to an outstanding Indian scholar between the age of 45 to 65 years. The TIES/TIES Trust would receive nominations based on advertisement. A selection committee constituted by TIES Trust would select the suitable scholar based on his/her contributions to theoretical/applied econometrics research.
    The selected scholar shall give a minimum of two lectures during the year in any of the reputed Indian institutes/universities chosen by the TIES/TIES Trust and one lecture during the annual TIES conference.
    The selected scholar would be honored with a citation and a suitable cash prize during the annual conference.
    The entire cost of selection, travel, and cash prize involved would be financed from the interest income generated from the corpus fund.

    The awardees are :

    • Dr. Kaushik Basu for the year 2015
    • Dr. Bhaskar Dutta for the year 2016
    • Dr. Dilip Mookherjee for the year 2017

     

  3. Prof. A. L. Nagar Visiting Fellowship
  4. This would be an annual fellowship to be given to a maximum of two young research scholars in a year who are pursuing their Ph.d in India. The research scholars who are below the age of 30 years are eligible for this fellowship. Under this fellowship, the research scholar would spend one to two months with an expert/institution/university within India that can contribute substantially to the thesis work.
    A selection committee constituted by TIES Trust would receive the nominations/applications and select the research scholar based on the research proposal, confirmation from the host expert/institute/university and also based on the present status of the thesis.
    The TIES/TIES Trust would provide travel and moderate living expenses to the selected scholars and also a token honorarium to the host expert.

Mahalanobis Memorial Medal

At the 13th annual conference of the Society held on January 10,1974 at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, it was resolved to institute gold medals in memory of Professor P.C. Mahalanobis and rise donations to meet the expenses of the medals and fellowships to deserving young scientists.

A search Committee is appointed at least one year in advance (a) to invite nominations for the award of the medal, (b) to recommend to the Council the names of persons who in their judgement are fit to receive the Mahalanobis Memorial Medal (M3), and (c) to provide citation for the award in each individual case.

International Award: A gold medal in memory of the late Professor P.C.Mahalanobis will be awarded once in four years to a person anywhere in the world who is not above the age of 45 years at the time of the award and who has made outstanding contributions to quantitative economics.

National Award: A gold medal in memory of the late Professor P.C. Mahalanobis will be awarded once in two years to an Indian who is not above the age of 45 years at the time of the award and who has made outstanding contributions to quantitative economics, while working in India.

“Prof Sukhomoy Chakravarty Memorial Lecture” :

Recently, Prof Sukhomoy Chakravarty Memorial Trust has been merged with the TIES Trust.  Under this, the TIES/TIES Trust needs to organize the annual Memorial lecture.  Under this new arrangement, the first Memorial lecture was given by Dr Vijay Kelkar during the annual conference at NISM Mumbai.
